Questions raised about safety of the U.S. MOX plant

An investigative report in ProPublica.org, Safety Reviewers Raise Questions About Construction of New Nuclear Fuel Plan, documents a number of concerns about safety of the MOX Fuel Fabrication Facility (MFFF) that is being built at the Savannah River Site. According to the report, NRC safety reviewers identified a number of issues that have not been properly addressed during the construction licensing process. These included questions about plutonium Material Control and Accounting system at the facility.

NRC issued its Final Safety Evaluation Report on the MOX plant in December 2010. The facility, however, does not yet have an operating license from NRC, the process that will take several years. There are also questions about economic viability of the MOX program
